Urban/Rural Forest Interface Institute
Resource managers of public, private and industrial lands are being challenged to provide traditional forest products and services as well as new, less tangible forest benefits by and increasingly urbanized and knowledgeable population. More than 60 percent of the southern population lives in urban areas and 25 percent of the South's valuable forest resource is located in the urban/rural interface. The resulting conflicting values and environmental pressures often make regulatory action inevitable. Increased awareness and knowledge of urban/rural forest interface issues will better position foresters and other natural resource managers to participate in resolving issues critical to the future of forestry. During this course, speakers, field trips, and interactive sessions will challenge participants to begin adopting mangement strategies in the urban/rural forest interface which are soically acceptable as well as economically and environmentally sound.
