The Urban Forestry Institute - The Wildland-Urban Interface: Balancing growth with natural resource management and conservation
In this course, the Urban Forestry institute offered up-to date information on forest/urban interface issues. The course covers tools for planning and managing growth, natural resource management and conservation, and human dimensions issues. A team of natural resource specialists taught the course, interacting with students in lectures, discussions, and problem-solving projects. On a one-day field trip, participants learned about growth management, recreation opportunities, land use policies and fire management in Flagler County, FL. Topics and speakers included: 1. Using GIS to identify critical community forest lands for conservation in the GA Piedmont (Lee Carmon) 8. Ecosystem management: An ecological approach to land-use decisions (Wayne Zipperer) 9. Surviving development and construction: How to develop land environmentally (Mary Duryea) 10. Managing for fire (Alan Long) 11. Managing for forest health (George Blakeslee) 12. Managing industrial forestland at the interface (Guerry Doolittle) 13. Wildlife Management (Joe Schaefer) 14. Watershed management (Larry Korhnak) 15. Biological invaders in the WUI (Hallie Dozier) 16. Managing forests in small parcels (Bob Bardon) 17. Exploring conflicts in the interface (Martha Monroe) 18. People's opinions about trees in the WUI (Brenda Allen) 19. Providing for intense forest recreation demand in the WUI (Taylor Stein) University course credit was available.
